About Vladimir Putin
Vladimir Putin (born 7 October 1952) is a Russian politician and former intelligence officer who currently serves as Russia’s president. Putin has been president or prime minister continuously since 1999, serving as prime minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012, and as president from 2000 to 2008 and again since 2012.
Putin spent 16 years as a KGB foreign intelligence officer, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before resigning in 1991 to pursue a political career in Saint Petersburg. In 1996, he relocated to Moscow to join President Boris Yeltsin’s administration.
Before being appointed Prime Minister in August 1999, he briefly served as Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) and Secretary of the Russian Security Council.
Following Yeltsin’s resignation, Putin took over as acting president and was elected president for the first time less than four months later.
In 2004, Putin was re-elected. Because he was constitutionally limited to two consecutive terms as president, Putin served as prime minister again under Dmitry Medvedev from 2008 to 2012.
He was re-elected president in 2012, despite allegations of fraud and protests, and was re-elected in 2018.
After a referendum, he signed constitutional amendments into law in April 2021, including one that would allow him to run for reelection twice more, potentially extending his presidency to 2036.
