To be accurate in understanding the strongest militaries in Africa. PwrIndx evaluates several categories ranging from Manpower, air power and naval power.  Financial, logistical, and natural resources are all important. According to statista, the military strength of a country with an index score of 0.0000 is regarded as the most powerful.

Any progressive state seeking to protect its borders and interests must have military power. Overall, the continent is doing well against world superpowers, according to the strongest military in Africa 2022. The following is a list of Africa’s top 5 strongest armies.

1. Egypt

Egypt is ranked first in Africa in terms of military strength. For 2022, Egypt is ranked 12th out of 142 countries considered for the annual global Fire power review. It has a Power Index of 0.1869 (a score of 0.0000 is regarded as ‘perfect’).

General Classification of the Egyptian Army

  • Number of active soldiers: 450,000.
  • Air Power:  1,056 military aircrafts and  250 Air Force fighters.
  • Attack aircrafts: With up to 88 attack aircraft, the Egyptian Air Force is ranked 8th in the world.
  • Helicopters: 304 military helicopters
  • Combat Tanks: With 3,735 tanks, the Egyptian army ranked 6th in the world.
  • Armored vehicles: 11,000
  • Naval strength: Egypt’s naval fleet ranks 7th in the world, with 316 vessels, including eight submarines, 50 patrol ships, nine frigates, seven corvettes, and 23 mine-hunting vessels.
  • Defense budget: Egypt ranks 29th in the world in terms of defense spending, with a defense budget of US$10 billion annually.

Since the military coup that deposed Morsi and installed al-Sisi as president, the military has been consolidating power. In last year’s constitutional referendum, proposed amendments gave the army greater powers, which activists say could lead to interventions in civilian affairs.

2. South Africa

South Africa is ranked second in Africa in terms of military strength. For 2022, South Africa is ranked  26 of 142 out countries considered for the annual global Fire power review. It has a Power Index score of 0.4276 (a score of 0.0000 is regarded as ‘perfect’).

South Africa has 72,000 active soldiers and 15,000 reserves. It also estimated that the country has 14,130,701 citizens who are physically fit for service if conscription laws are implemented.

General Classification of the South African Military 

South Africa has 225 aircraft assets in total: these include, 17 fighter aircraft, 7 special mission aircraft, 22 transport aircraft, 88 trainer aircraft and 91 total helicopters (of which, 12 are attack helicopters)

Land power: South Africa has a total of 2,935 assets in terms of land strength. There are 195 combat tanks, 2,565 armored fighting vehicles, 43 self-propelled artillery, 82 towed artillery, and 50 rocket projectors in total.

Naval power: South Africa has a total naval strength of 47 assets. Notably, there are currently no aircraft carriers, destroyers, or corvette-class vehicles in the country. Available assets  include 4 frigates, 3 submarines, 31 patrol craft, 2 mine warfare vessels, and 6 unspecified.

South Africa stands out for its land power but has recently lagged behind other nations in terms of air and naval power. The defense budget is estimated to be $2.9 billion.

3. Algeria

Algeria is ranked third in Africa in terms of military strength. For 2022, Algeria is ranked  31 of 142 out countries considered for the annual global Fire power review. It has a Power Index of score of 0.4724 (a score of 0.0000 is regarded as ‘perfect’).

Algeria has a total military force of 792,350 people, with a 520,000-strong active force and a 272,350-strong reserve. Algeria’s military is well-versed in counter-terrorism tactics, having fought the jihadist threat since the early 1990s.

 Algeria’s defense budget increased to $13 billion in 2021. According to SIPRI, the country was the major arms importer in the African continent in 2017, accounting for 46 percent of all imports to the region.

Algeria has an abundance of Military equipment, as evidenced by the following numbers: 103 fighter aircraft, 22 attack aircraft, 45 attack helicopters, 880 combat tanks, 316 rocket projectors, 7,361 fighting armored vehicles, 320 self-propelled artillery, 240 towed artillery, 5 naval frigates, 6 submarines, 25 naval patrol crafts, and so on.

4. Nigeria 

Nigeria is ranked fourth in Africa in terms of military strength. For 2022,  Nigeria is ranked 35 of 142 out countries considered for the annual global Fire power review. It has a Power Index score of 0.5745 (a score of 0.0000 is regarded as ‘perfect’)

For the past several years, the Nigerian army has been at odds with the Boko Haram insurgency. Despite significant gains made during Buhari’s presidency, there have been a few setbacks in the last years as the army is more trained for conventional warfare rather than the insurgents’ guerrilla tactics.

An abundant domestic oil supply, as in Algeria and Egypt, reduces the financial burden of military conflict. Nigeria has over 1,800 armored vehicles, 250 tanks, and 6,000 logistical vehicles, as well as nearly 300 aircraft and 25 high-powered naval vessels at its disposal. 

5. Morocco

Morocco is ranked fifth in Africa in terms of military strength. For 2022,  Morocco is ranked 55 of 142 out countries considered for the annual global Fire power review. It has a Power Index score of 0.8573 (a score of 0.0000 is regarded as ‘perfect’)

According to Global Firepower, Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces have 325,000 soldiers, 200,000 of whom are in active military service, 100,000 reserve soldiers, and 25,000 in paramilitary forces.

The Moroccan Air Force consists of 249 aircraft, including 83 interceptor aircraft, 64 helicopters, and 29 aircraft. There are 121 military ships in the Royal Navy, including one corvette, 6 frigates, and 22 patrol vessels.
