Moshood Abiola, also known as MKO Abiola, was born on August 24, 1937, and died on July 7, 1998. He was a businessman, publisher, and politician from Nigeria.
In 1993, Abiola ran for president, but the election was annulled by Ibrahim Babangida, the previous military president, due to allegations of corruption and unfairness.
Moshood Abiola began his professional career in 1956 as a bank clerk at Barclays Bank in Ibadan, South-West Nigeria. He was hired as an executive accounts officer by the Western Region Finance Corporation after two years, and then moved to Glasgow, Scotland, to continue his studies. He earned a first-class degree in accounting from Glasgow University.
After returning to Nigeria, Abiola worked as a senior accountant at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital, then at Pfizer, before joining ITT Corporation as vice-president of Africa and the Middle East. While remaining chairman of the corporation’s Nigerian subsidiary, Abiola spent much of his time and made the most of his money in the United States.
