What did Mahatma Gandhi do?

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. He was a shy, unassuming man who was deeply influenced by his Hindu faith. Gandhi’s father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the dewan (chief minister) of Porbandar; his mother, Putlibai, was a devout Hindu. As a child, Gandhi was deeply influenced by the stories of Hinduism, especially Rama and the Buddhist leader Gautama Buddha.

Gandhi was educated in both India and England. He initially studied law in London. He went back to India in 1891 and stayed there for two uncertain years, failing to establish a prosperous legal career.

In 1893, he went to South Africa to represent an Indian businessman in a legal battle. After that, he lived in South Africa for 21 years. It was here that Gandhi established a family and initially used nonviolent resistance in a civil rights struggle.

In 1915, at the age of 45, he returned to India and immediately began organizing peasants, farmers, and urban laborers to oppose exorbitant land taxation and discrimination.

Gandhi became a leader of the Indian National Congress in 1921. He advocated a non-violent approach to achieve independence from Britain. He was arrested many times by the British authorities, but he continued to lead the independence movement.

In 1947, India finally gained independence from Britain. Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu fanatic. His philosophy of non-violent resistance has inspired people all over the world.
