Lou Holtz was born on January 6, 1937, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Holtz was a standout high school football player, and he accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Minnesota. After two years at Minnesota, Holtz transferred to the University of Notre Dame, where he starred as a quarterback.

Holtz began his coaching career in 1966, when he became the head coach at William and Mary. After two successful seasons at William and Mary, Holtz was hired as the head coach at the University of Arkansas. In his first season at Arkansas, Holtz led the Razorbacks to an appearance in the national championship game. When Holtz retired from coaching, he remained involved in the sport as a commentator and analyst.
