Jane Austen Quotes

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775, in the Steventon rectory in Hampshire, England. She was the seventh child of the Rev. George Austen, a clergyman, and his wife, Cassandra. Austen was educated primarily at home by her father and older brothers.

In 1793 the family moved to Bath, where Austen began writing sketches of daily life. In 1796 the Austens settled in the fashionable resort of Southampton. There Austen wrote her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, which was privately published in 1811.

Austen’s second novel, Pride and Prejudice, was published in 1813 and was an instant success. In the next six years she wrote three more novels: Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), and Northanger Abbey (1818). These novels, collectively known as the “Regency novels,” are set in the period from 1811 to 1820, when George III was king of England.

In 1817 Austen moved with her family to Chawton Cottage in Hampshire. There she wrote her last two novels, Persuasion (1818) and Sanditon (1818), the latter unfinished at her death. Austen never married and had no children. She died on July 18, 1817, at the age of 41.
