Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak was born on May 4, 1928, and died on February 25, 2020. He was an Egyptian Military officer and politician who served as Egypt‘s fourth president from 1981 to 2011.
Mubarak was a military officer in the Egyptian Air Force before entering politics. From 1972 until 1975, he was its commander, rising to the rank of air chief marshal in 1973. President Anwar Sadat appointed him vice president in 1975, and he took over the presidency following Sadat’s assassination in 1981.
After 18 days of protests, Mubarak resigned during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. On February 11, 2011, then-Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that both Mubarak and Suleiman had resigned and that authority had been transferred to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
On April 13, 2011, Mubarak and his two sons, Alaa and Gamal, were detained for 15 days and questioned regarding charges of corruption and abuse of authority. Mubarak was subsequently charged with negligence for failing to stop the death of nonviolent demonstrators during the revolution.
Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison by an Egyptian court on June 2, 2012. On January 13, 2013, the Egyptian High Court of Appeal reversed Mubarak’s conviction and ordered a retrial. Mubarak and his sons were convicted of corruption and sentenced to prison in a retrial on May 9, 2015.
Mubarak was held in a military hospital while his sons were released by a Cairo court on October 12, 2015. Mubarak was acquitted by the Court of Cassation on 2 March 2017 and freed on 24 March 2017.
Mubarak died on 25 February 2020, aged 91 and he received a Military Funeral Honor.
