Francis of Assisi Brief Biography

Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the Franciscan Order, which is now one of the largest Christian religious orders in the world. Francis is known for his love for nature and animals, as well as his deep faith in God.

In 1209, he established a small hermitage on Mount Subasio near Assisi, Italy. The site became a place where people could gather to pray and reflect on their lives. Francis’s followers often called him “the Poor Man” because they believed that he had found God’s love through poverty.

He traveled to Egypt in 1219 in an effort to win over Sultan Al-Kamil and put an end to the Fifth Crusade’s fighting. He made arrangements for the first live nativity scene for Christmas in 1223. In accordance with Christian tradition, he was stigmatized in 1224 while experiencing a Seraphic angel apparition while in a state of religious ecstasy.

He established the Third Order of St. Francis, the Custody of the Holy Land, the Order of St. Clare for women, the Men’s Friars Minor, and the Women’s Order of St. Clare. After the Pope gave his community the go-ahead, he increasingly distanced himself from international affairs.

Francis is known for his support of nature and animals. On his feast day, October 4, churches began holding ceremonies in which animals were blessed. He is renowned for his fervor for the Eucharist. He was named the patron saint of Italy along with Catherine of Siena.
