In this post, I’ve shared some of the interesting facts about Tunisia.

Tunisia is Africa’s northernmost country. It is located in the north Africa‘s Maghreb area and shares borders with Algeria and Libya. Tunisia includes the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains as well as the northernmost regions of the Sahara desert. Cape Angela, Africa’s northernmost point, is located in Tunisia.

  1. Tunis is Tunisia’s capital and largest city, located on the country’s northeastern coast and has a population of 693,210.

2. Tunisia is a unitary semi-presidential representative democratic republic and the only country in North Africa classified as “Free” by Freedom House.

3. Tunisia’s official language is Literary Arabic. Although Tunisia is a multilingual country, the Berber language has been the country’s native language from ancient times.

Today, the great majority of the population speak Tunisian Arabic, commonly known as Derja, as their native language. 

4. There are also a large number of people who speak French since, during the French colonization of Tunisia, French was introduced in public institutions, particularly the school system, which became a powerful vehicle for language transmission.

5. Islam is the most prevalent religion, with approximately 99% of Sunni Muslims. Christians, Jews, Shia Muslims, Baha’is, and unbelievers make up less than 1% of the population.

6. The Great Mosque of Kairouan in Tunisia is the oldest and most prestigious mosque in the Muslim West, and it has the world’s oldest standing minaret. It is also regarded as a masterpiece of Islamic art and architecture.

7. Tunisia gained independence from France on March 20, 1956, with Habib Bourguiba as the prime minister. A year later, Bourguiba became the country’s first President after declaring Tunisia as a republic.

8. Kais Saied, a retired law professor, has been the President of Tunisia since October 2019.

9. The legal system in Tunisia is influenced by French civil law, while the Law of Personal Status is based on Islamic law. In 1956, Sharia courts were abolished.

1O. Agriculture accounts for 11.6 percent of GDP, industry for 25.7 percent, and services for 62.8 percent. The industrial sector consists mostly of the production of clothes and footwear, automotive parts, and electrical machinery.

11. The European Union is Tunisia’s main major trade partner, accounting for 72.5% of Tunisian imports and 75% of Tunisian exports.

12. Tourism, Tunisia is one of the most visited countries in Africa, offering appealing tourist destinations. The cosmopolitan capital city of Tunis, the historic ruins of Carthage, the Muslim and Jewish areas of Djerba, and coastal resorts with beautiful beaches and warm weather are among Tunisia’s tourist attractions.
