Interesting facts about Ghana

In this post, I’ve shared some of the interesting facts about Ghana.

Ghana is a western African country located on the Gulf of Guinea’s coast. Despite its modest size and population, Ghana is one of Africa’s most powerful countries, partially due to its vast natural resources and partly because it was the first black African country south of the Sahara to gain independence from British colonial rule in  1957

  1. Ghana is West Africa’s second-most populated country, behind Nigeria. According to the world Population Review, the country has a population of over 32 million people.

2. Accra is Ghana’s capital and largest city, with a population of over 2 million residents.

3. Kwame Nkrumah was Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President, having led the Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957.  (After independence, the country’s name was changed from Gold Coast to Ghana.)

4. The most generally spoken language in Ghana is Akan, which is followed by Dagbanli. However, Ghana is a multilingual country, with around eighty languages spoken. The official language  is English, which was inherited from the colonial era.

5. Ghana is a multi-ethnic country with a diverse population, with the Akan ethnic group accounting for 47.5% of the population, followed by Mole-Dagbon (16.6%), Ewe (13.9%), Ga-Dangm (7.4%), Gurma (5.7%), Guang (3.7%), Grusi (2.5%), Mande (1.1%), and other ethnic groups (1.4 % ).

6. Ghana has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the rainy and the dry season. The West African monsoon winds have a large influence on the climate in Ghana.   The climate is generally warm, the northern part of the country has only one rainy season, which lasts from May to September. The rainy season in southern Ghana features two distinct seasons: the major season, which lasts from April to July, and the minor season, which lasts from September to November.

7. Ghana is a unitary presidential constitutional democracy with a multi-party parliamentary system. However, two parties dominate the system: the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

8. Ghana and the United States have a strong relationship. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama are three recent US presidents who have visited Ghana on official missions. Many Ghanaian diplomats and politicians have positions in international organizations, including former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, International Criminal Court Judge Akua Kuenyehia, and former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor, who both worked as UN officials.

9. Ghana is a country with a middle income status. The  Services sector  accounts for 50% of GDP, followed by manufacturing 24.1%, extractive industries 5%, and taxes 20.9%

10. Ghana is the second peaceful country in Africa after  Mauritius. The Global Peace Index (GPI) in 2021 gave Ghana a score of 1.72 and  ranked 38th in the world out of 163 countries. 

12. Ghana’s  national men’s football team is known as the Black Stars. The country has won the African Cup of Nation  four times.

11. Ghana’s main exports are gold, cocoa beans and timber products.
