Facts About Cameroon based on History, Demographics and Economy

In this post, I’ve shared some of the interesting facts about Cameroon.

Cameroon is a West-Central African country that shares borders with  Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo.  Because of its strategic location at the crossroads of West and Central Africa, the country is sometimes referred to as West African and other times as Central Africa.

In 1972, the country was renamed the United Republic of Cameroon, and in 1984, it became the Republic of Cameroon. The current president, Paul Biya, has been in power since 1982,

Here are 15 interesting facts about Cameroon that I have chosen and thoroughly researched.

  1. Yaounde is the capital, and second largest city in Cameroon. According to the World population review the city has a population of around .3 million residents  as of April 2022.

2. Douala is Cameroon’s largest city and its economic hub. It is home to Central Africa’s largest port, which handles the majority of the country’s primary exports, including oil, cocoa, and coffee, as well as lumber, metals, and fruits. The city is estimated to have a population of  3.9 million residents as of  2022.

3. Cameroon’s official languages are French and English. However, about 20 million Cameroonians speak around 250 different native languages. This is why  Cameroon is considered as one of the world’s most linguistically diverse countries.

4. Cameroon’s predominant religion is Christianity, alongside significant minorities of Muslims and traditional believers. Various varieties of Christian churches and Muslim mosques practice freely across Cameroon, while traditionalists operate in their shrines and temples.

5. Cameroon is a member of the African Union, the UN, the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the Commonwealth of Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

6. Cameroon’s current president, Paul Biya, is 89 years old as of 2022. He has been president since November 6, 1982, making him the second-longest-ruling president in Africa, the oldest head of state in Africa, and the world’s longest-ruling non-royal leader.

7. Cameroon’s President is the official head of government and the most powerful man in the country. The president creates policies, in-charge of administering government agencies, commanding the armed forces, negotiating and ratifying treaties, and declaring a state of emergency. The president chooses government officials at all levels, including the prime minister and other government officials at all levels. 

8. Cameroon is one of Africa’s most corrupt countries. Corruption has spread to all levels of government and civil society, including the executive, judiciary, police, and even the business sector. The primary causes are a profound lack of political will to combat corruption and neopatrimonialism. Other factors include personal interests, a weak judiciary and practically nonexistent parliamentary opposition, nepotism and favoritism, and an inefficient accountability system, among others. Cameroon was ranked 144 out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (2021), with a higher ranking indicating more perceived corruption.

9. Human rights violations are prevalent in Cameron, with rights groups accusing police and military elements of mistreating and even torturing criminal suspects, ethnic minorities, gays, and political activists. The army and armed separatist groups perpetrated major human rights violations and abuses, according to Amnesty International’s Cameron report 2021. Dozens of followers of the opposition parties and anglophone leaders were unlawfully imprisoned.

10. The Penal Code of 2016 makes same-sex sexual activity illegal in Cameron. Section 347-1 of the criminal code makes same-sex sexual acts illegal, with penalties ranging from 6 months to 5 years in prison.

11. Cameroon has a tropical climate that is semi-arid in the north and humid and rainy in the rest of the country. Due to the African monsoon, which is shorter in the north and longer in the south, almost everywhere has a dry season in winter and a rainy season in summer.

12. Lake Chad is Cameroon’s biggest lake, which it shares with neighboring Chad. The lake’s size changes from season to season, depending on rainfall.

13. The coast of Cameroon has two main beach resort towns, Limbe with black volcanic beaches and Kribi with white-sand beaches, Mount Cameroon on the coast is the tallest peak in Central and West Africa and attracts hikers and climbers, and the nation’s biggest tourist draw is in Cameroon’s north.

Waza National Park, West Africa’s largest and best-run wildlife reserve, is located in the vicinity. These parks provide opportunities for both wildlife observation and big-game hunting. Cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hippopotami, and rhinoceroses are among the animals found in this area.

14. In Cameroon, National Day, also known as Unity Day, is the most notable holiday linked with patriotism. It is observed every year on May 20. Cameroonians opted for a unitary state over the  federal state in a nationwide referendum on May 20, 1972.

15. Cameron’s most prevalent cuisine is a dish from Cocoyams, maize, cassava, millet, plantains, potatoes, rice, or yams often mashed into dough-like fufu. This is served with greens, groundnuts, and palm oil sauce, soup, or stew.
