Clare showed an interest in writing and storytelling. When Clare was six years old, her parents took her on a trip to England, where she fell in love with the country and its literature. Clare remembers visiting castles and cathedrals, and being fascinated by the ancient stories she read about in books. After college, Clare moved to Los Angeles, California, where she worked for a few years as an entertainment journalist. It was while working as a journalist that Clare began writing fan fiction based on the Harry Potter series. In 2005, she published her first book, City of Bones, which was the beginning of the Mortal Instruments series.
