CS Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland on November 29, 1898. He was a writer and academic who became one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the 20th century.

Lewis is best known for his Chronicles of Narnia series, as well as his non-fiction work Mere Christianity. Lewis was a prolific writer and thinker, and his work continues to be influential today.

Lewis was educated at home until he was 10 years old, at which point he was sent to a boarding school. Lewis was a gifted student and won a scholarship to study at Oxford University.

He began his studies at Oxford in 1917, and he soon became involved in the literary and debating societies. Lewis was also a member of the Christian group the Oxford Apostles.

In 1933, he published his first book, a collection of poetry. Lewis served in the British Army during World War I, and he was wounded in battle. After the war, he returned to Oxford and completed his degree.

Lewis was a prolific writer, and he published more than 30 books. He is best known for his children’s books, such as The Chronicles of Narnia.

CS Lewis was also a popular speaker and he gave hundreds of lectures throughout his career. Lewis died on November 22, 1963, at the age of 64.

Lewis’s legacy is not just confined to the world of theology and philosophy, however. He was also a great advocate for the arts, and was responsible for the founding of the Inklings, a literary group that included J.R.R. Tolkien and Owen Barfield.

Lewis’s influence can be seen in all areas of life, and he is rightly regarded as one of the most important Christian writers of the past century.

C. S. Lewis Quotes on Love

  1. Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness.”

2. “If you love deeply, you’re going to get hurt badly. But it’s still worth it.”

3. “Love may forgive all infirmities and love still in spite of them: but Love cannot cease to will their removal.”

4. “Awake. Love. Think. Speak. Be walking trees. Be talking beasts. Be divine waters.”

5. “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”

6. “Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person’s ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.”

7. “Gratitude looks to the Past and love to the Present; fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead.”

8. “Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.”

9. “The great thing to remember is that though our feelings come and go God’s love for us does not.”

10. “You cannot love a fellow creature fully till you love God.”

11. “Do not waste time bothering whether you ‘love’ your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.”

12. “Clearly one must read every good book at least once every ten years.”

C. S. Lewis Quotes on Christianity

13. “Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance, the only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”

14. “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

15. “The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.”

16. “To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you.”

17. “I didn’t go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.”

18. “God allows us to experience the low points of life in order to teach us lessons that we could learn in no other way.”

19. “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.”

20. “We were promised sufferings. They were part of the program. We were even told, ‘Blessed are they that mourn,’ and I accept it. I’ve got nothing that I hadn’t bargained for. Of course it is different when the thing happens to oneself, not to others, and in reality, not imagination.”

21. “Faith, in the sense in which I am here using the word, is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.”

22. “If you are a Christian you do not have to believe that all the other religions are simply wrong all through. If you are an atheist you do have to believe that the main point in all the religions of the whole world is simply one huge mistake.”

23. “A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.”

24. “God can’t give us peace and happiness apart from Himself because there is no such thing.”

25. “It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

C.S. Lewis Friendship Quote

26. “Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art…. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”

27. “What draws people to be friends is that they see the same truth. They share it.”

28. “Friendship … is born at the moment when one man says to another “What! You too? I thought that no one but myself . . .”

29. “Friendship arises out of mere Companionship when two or more of the companions discover that they have in common some insight or interest or even taste which the others do not share and which, till that moment, each believed to be his own unique treasure (or burden).”

30. “The mark of Friendship is not that help will be given when the pinch comes (of course it will) but that, having been given, it makes no difference at all.”

31. “To have Faith in Christ means, of course, trying to do all that He says. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice.”

32. “Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”

33. “Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

34. “I think that if God forgives us we must forgive ourselves. Otherwise, it is almost like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal than Him.”

35. “It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present in us; it is the very sign of His presence.”

36. “He died not for men, but for each man. If each man had been the only man made, He would have done no less.”

37. “And out of that hopeless attempt has come nearly all that we call human history—money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery—the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.”

38. “There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him.”
