About Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton was an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first Secretary of Treasury under George Washington from 1789 to 1795.

Hamilton was orphaned as a child after being born out of wedlock in Charlestown, Nevis, and was raised by a wealthy merchant.

He envisioned a strong national defense, an industrial economy, and a central government led by an energetic president.

He successfully argued that the Constitution’s implied powers provided the legal authority to fund the national debt, assume the debts of the states, and establish the First Bank of the United States, which was funded by an import tariff and a whiskey tax.
